I first saw Antigoon on an issue of Draft magazine and was drawn to the image on the label. I had never seen or heard of this beer before. I was quite intrigued. After some research I learned that Antigoon is a Belgian Ale from Ursel, Belgium and it is brewed by Brouwerij The Musketeers.
Recently, to my surprise, while visiting my local beer store I saw Antigoon on the shelves and couldn’t pass it up. After a few days of cooling it was time to try it. As you can see from the pictures below Antigoon is bright golden in color with lots of carbonation and huge amount of head. Nice floral and hoppy aroma with some presence of bananas. Nice and light for a Belgian ale, this beer turned out to be better than I had expected. I hope to find this again.
A little history behind the name, Druon Antigoon was a mythical giant who guarded the bridge on the Sheldt River (a river running through northern France and western Belgium). Antigoon charged a toll from those utilizing the bridge to cross the river. Those who didn’t pay had their hands cut off by Antigoon. Legend has it that Antigoon finally met his match, a Roman soldier named Brabo, who cut off Antigoon’s hand and threw it into the river.Related posts:
