Cigar City has a talent for using different types of wooden barrels to complement the flavors in their beers. One example is the French Oak Jose Marti, which is an American porter that has been aged in French Oak barrels.
The original Jose Marti American Porter is a hoppier-than-usual porter, which is not my favorite; actually I don’t like it all, but let it rest in a French Oak barrel for a little while and it transforms into a completely new beer. The aging process adds a whole new set of flavors and a new dimension to the original Jose Marti.
The difference between the original Jose Marti and the French Oak versions is that the presence of Oak is notable in the French Oak, but not as intense as it is on some of their beers such as the white oak Jai Alai. Along with the Oak, you will also notice subtle notes of chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla and some dark berries. The French Oak version tastes a lot different than the original. As you taste it you will note oak, roasted malts, bitter chocolate and hops in the finish. The Jose Marti nicely carbonated, medium bodied creamy resulting in a very unique brew.
As mentioned previously, this version of the Jose Marti is much different than the original. I will admit that I am not a fan of the original, but I very much liked the French Oak version. I tend to enjoy just about any of the barrel aged beers from Cigar City.
