I recently acquired three different Port Brewing beers, the Mongo IPA, Aniversary Ale and Wipeout IPA. Not having tried any of the three, I decided to start with the Mongo IPA.  Story has it that it was brewed as a tribute a brewery kitten named Columbus AKA Mongo, who lost all of his 9 lives in 10 short months, hence why Mongo  brewed with lots of Columbus, Amarillo and Cascade hops.

The Mongo IPA is actually an Imperial/Double IPA. You can certainly tell this is a west-coast IPA from its floral aroma and fresh taste. You will notice there is a bit of sweet malt that works well with the bitterness from the hops. The alcohol is very well masked making this a very easy to drink beer. Don’t let the “easy to drink” fool you because this is not, at all, a light beer. It could very well sneak up on you with its well hidden alcohol taste. This is an excellent double IPA and it’s one one my favorites so far right along with Laguinitas Hop stoopid, Ballast Point Sculpin and Bear Republic Racer 5.
