Have you ever heard of Boston Bakery & Cafe?
First, I would like to say that it has nothing to do with Boston.
I have driven by Boston Bakery & Cafe so many times on Colonial Drive and never thought it to be a Banh Mi Shop, a Vietnamese style sub. It is a really small establishment that sells banh mi for $3.00 per sandwich. With low prices like that, do not expect the best service or to be waited on. Plus, the place is not big enough to have more than two small table to sit at.
They offer a variety of different banh mi combination in addition to desserts and boba drinks.

Of course, I was on the mission to get their banh mi. We went with the classic “#1 Combination,” which this delicious delectable comes with butter, pate, head cheese, ham, steam pork, cucumber, jalapeno, cilantro, and pickled vegetables all stuffed in a French bread.
#1 Combination

Our order was promptly made and fresh too. The French bread came toasted with all the goodies of pickled carrots and daikon, which are my favorite, but I found it to be lacking in the meat department. I suppose a $3.00 sub will only get you so much. Next time I go there, I will have to ask them for double-meat and also have to add in some slices of roast pork. Other than the fact that they were skimping on the meat, the taste is authentic. I think this place will be my preferred place for Banh Mi.

Things to know about this place:
1. Bring cash because his credit card machine does not always work.
2. Call ahead and place your order to-go.
3. If you buy 5 subs you get 1 free! –Vietnamese families love to take advantage of this deal!

Very cool — how do you rate this place with the other banh mi places in that area? We’ve usually opted for Bale but the last few times were middle of the road. Like you, we’ve passed this place a lot, just never stopped in. Always tempted by the other places in and around it, you know?
I would say that Boston Bakery and Bale are head to head. Bale does offer more variety and different sub combination. But this place is worth the try! Just be sure to have cash! haha
Love both Boston Bakery and Bale, but each is quite different to me. I always order the combination Banh Mi with a random flavored Boba at Boston Bakery. Fresh, flavorful and filling. While at Bale, they press the sandwich which reminds me of a cuban, though I prefer not pressed. If I’m on my way somewhere, I stop by Boston bakery. If I want a place where I can sit down and relax, it’s Bale. They have unique desserts there as well.
You make a very good point! Both very different and unique. I haven’t had a pressed banh mi before, I usually just ask for plain toast. Word on the street that Banh Mi Nha Trang is suppose to be really good too.
