Captain Lawrence’s Smoke from the Oak series is a porter that is aged in oak barrels previously used for wine, rum or whiskey. There is a separate batch for each one.
I was fortunate enough to acquire a bottle of their Smoke from the Oak wine barrel, batch #5, and I must say, this is one of the best beers I’ve had so far, and I have been drinking craft beers for many years.
Why is this beer so amazing, you ask… Well it’s because of it’s unique and complex flavors. It stands out from most beers out there.
First off, it has a bit of tangyness to it from the type of yeast used, add the flavors from the oak barrel and this becomes an amazing beverage. Truly unique and bursting with flavor.
Captain Lawrence beers are currently only available in New York and some of it’s neighboring areas. Hopefully, some day, they will expand their distribution far enough where their beers could reach Florida??? Maybe…I’m hopeful.
I look forward to trying the whiskey and rum barrel versions.
