I recently had the pleasure to try out Pom Pom Teahouse & Sandwicheria. It was suggested to me by Matt of Lazy Moon. It was, needless to say, a really great suggestion! (Thanks for the tip Matt!)
My fiancé and I had a little bit of trouble looking for it at night because it was a little tucked away and it was not well lit. I would not have even noticed it if I did not get that excellent referral from Matt.
Pom Pom is located down on Bumby Ave. in the “Bumby Plaza.” What I have heard about this place was that, “this chick makes a killer sandwich!” that was enough words for me to go and investigate.
My first impressions of the restaurant were that it was very cozy, colorful, bright, and eclectic. It had art on the wall featuring a local artist. The menu reflects the setting. There were mixtures of ingredients that you normally do not expect to see in a sandwich listing.
At a glance of the menu, the first thing that stood out to me was the “Green Milk Tea.” I thought to myself, I have never had green milk tea before. It was similar to the concept of Thai Tea or Bobba Tea (but without the bobbas). It was great… It was light, refreshing and not overly sweet. I really liked it. I think next time, I am going to try their Marsala Chai Milk Tea.
When our cool waitress, Nati, came back to take our order…
I decided to go with a pressed sandwich, it doesn’t have a name but this is their description in their menu: “Asian BBQ Pulled Pord with Scallions, Hoison BBQ Sauce & Asian Slaw.” Nati recommended that I get it on pumpernickel bread and so I took her advice and had them put it on pumpernickel bread.
After having that pressed sandwich I have decided that they should call this sandwich, “An Asian Invasion In MY MOUTH!” –Because this sandwich had a lot of the familiar flavors from the Asian cuisine but a bit of a twist with textures of the pulled pork and the crisp slaw and scallions. It was Mega YUMMO!
My fiancé, had some slightly similar in genre, he went for the, “Fu Man Chu.” I think he got it because of the name, I could be wrong…
But his was described in the menu as: “Asian Pulled Pork, Watercress, Ginger Cranberry Chutney & Red Onions.” It was also on pumpernickel bread and it all tasted awesome.
This was a very unique little tea house that I would highly recommend to anyone it is a lot of bang for your buck. I think when we make plans to go out to Redlight Redlight, we are going to make it a usual to go to Pom Pom for dinner or dessert before heading over to Redlight Redlight.
