Lac Viet

Lac Viet Bistro in downtown Orlando on East Colonial Drive. My brother invited us to go out and try Lac Viet. He has read many reviews and decided to try it out to see what all the fuss is about. My brother and I are first generation Vietnamese which makes us the toughest critics on Vietnamese food.

The one thing that we have to be more sympathetic about is that most Vietnamese restaurants here are catered to the “American” taste buds. So to tell you upfront, this restaurant, like many other Vietnamese restaurants in Orlando, it is just OK. They all claim to be authentic but they are missing lots of ingredients that make the dish very unique. Don’t get me wrong, it taste good but it could be better.

Summer Rolls

For example, we ordered an appetizer, an order of Summer Rolls. This traditionally contains: lettuce, bean sprouts, fresh assorted mints, cucumbers, chives, rice vermicelli and sliced pork and shrimps neatly wrapped with a thin sheet of rice paper, which was softened by water.

This was what is missing: assorted mints, cucumbers and there was just enough protein within the roll. Having the mints inside gives the summer rolls a refreshing and light taste and having the cucumbers provides that crisps taste with every bite. There was just too much lettuce in this summer roll and there was not shrimp or pork to balance out the taste of roll.

Typically, summer rolls come with a dipping sauce which is known as the “peanut sauce.” This peanut sauce is made in a combination of Hoison sauce, peanut butter, water, and a hint of apple cider vinegar.

They usually top the peanut sauce with crushed roasted peanuts and I like to add some hot garlic chili paste to my dipping sauce. This definitely gives the sauce a bit of a KICK.

HOT SAUCE!

Like I said, it is good but it could be better.

The one thing Lac Viet Bistro is doing better is the sense of attentive service and providing a sophisticated and clean environment for their customers to dine in. I know there has been some horror stories about some of these Vietnamese restaurants being dirty but this restaurant is most definitely not one of them.

On the MEGA YUMMO SCALE, this Lac Viet Bistro rate MEGA YUMMO-O-O-o 3.5 out of 5.

Will I return to this place to dine? OF course! Like I said before, it is good but I know that it could be better.

Would I recommend this place to my friends? Yes, because I know their operation is clean and friendly at a great price.
